Cagayan de Oro City is the home of many talented and world-class musicians, and Dodu Abrio is among them. But he isn’t just the typical artist who creates music to entertain people and make a name for himself; he uses his talent to help promote peace and unity not just in our locality but all throughout the country. Instead of creating music for his own benefit, he has decided a long time ago to use it to send the message of peace. Selflessly devoting his time and talent to make a change through music and help those in need, Dodu Abrio is among those who performed at the Kiosko in Divisoria for the ONE CDO Typhoon Sendong Victims Benefit Concert last December 2011. In 2013, he has also shared his music in several significant events in the city including Earth Hour with CDO World Music Federation at Centrio last March and the 30th International AIDS Candlelight Memorial last May at the Kiosko.
Dodu Abrio has also supported events and shows such as the SPMUDA International Peace Day Celebration in September 2013 and the Pork Barrel Peace Rally last August 2013; he has also performed during the Playing for Change Day “Peace Through Music” last September 2013; it was held at Centrio Mall. His last gig as a solo musician was in November 16, 2013 in Valencia City for HELP BOHOL, which was a fund-raiser for the earthquake victims in Visayas, particularly Bohol.
Musician Band for a Cause
After his last solo performance, Dodu Abrio shared his talent again for BANGON VISAYAS concert, which was also attended by CDO’s finest performers. But this time, Dodu Abrio performed with his newly established band who collectively call themselves Dodu Abrio & The Viajeros. The Viajeros are composed of Matthew Estremadura, Rex Añasco, Israel Cain Pioquinto, and Karlo June Abrio. Just like Dodu, they are also as ardent in supporting peace advocacy. The band also sees to it that the events and shows where they will perform are also promoting advocacies that are in line with theirs. In 2014, The Viajeros were among those invited to participate in the Promoting Mindanao Music Culture show at the Limketkai Mall Rotunda. The band was also present in the 31st International AIDS Candlelight Memorial which was attended by NGOs, students, volunteers, professionals, and advocates.
Playing for Change 2 – A United Front of Kagay-anon Musicians
Just last September 2014, together with the support of NAGMUS CDO (Nagkahiusang Musikero Cagayan de Oro) and Blackfish Production, Dodu Abrio and the rest of his band gathered Cagayan de Oro’s best to take part of an annual worldwide event called Playing for Change. Since 2013, Dodu Abrio has actively participated in Playing for Change and last year, he and his fellow musician advocates joined together for the Playing for Change 2 event, which they called “Awhag sa Kalinaw Mindanao: Dodu Abrio and Friends Concert for Peace in Mindanao.” The event did not only entertain the audience, it also promoted the importance of a peaceful Mindanao.
With the success that the band has achieved last year, Dodu Abrio and The Viajeros are definitely going to be more visible in the music industry not just in our city but all throughout Mindanao.
